6 Things I Miss About America

One of the things I get asked on a regular basis is, "Are you homesick?"

The answer is, not really. (Sorry mom!)

There are a few things I do miss about home so I figured I would share so some of you who have it don't take it for granted & those of you missing it also can sympathize.

- Food

I find I crave so much food when I am here, I guess you want what you can't have. Some of them are my American staples (Buffalo Chicken Tenders, Salad Creations, any form of Latin food, Jewish comfort food, etc) & others I have NO idea where the craving came from. I am not the biggest Chipotle fan (I know, that statement right there means I should give up my citizenship and never return home) but I would give ANYTHING for a burrito bow right now!

- Convenience

This just creeped me out one day. It looks like someone is staring at me on the train.

This might be one that makes very little sense since I live in a metropolitan city but stay with me real quick on this. For 11 years I have had my own car to just hop into & go wherever I felt like. Here I am on bus schedules, train schedules & without a bike in a major biking city.  Also, Google Maps can only help a girl out so much. I mean, I can't be the only one who gets confused by the compass situation and has no idea which way it wants me to go so I end up walking up and down a block  or crossing a street a lot.

- Understanding

I was talking to a friend, Oregon Girl Around the World, the other day about this; it is a blessing and a curse. By not understanding the language I have the ability to tune out all background noise when I am out but this also can make you quite lonely. Do I care what the people next to me are saying on the train? No, but I would like to follow along with their random conversation. I also would like to buy something in a store without having to do division (which I can not do basic math easily, shout out to the Florida school system) so this is something that I usually wait until AFTER all the money is spent to find out how much damage I have done.

- Target

Did you just get chills & hear angels sing? No, just me? @CNNMoney

Do I really need a reason? Honestly?! If you are still insisting that I share why then fine, I will tell you. The clothes, the food, the beauty supplies, the home decor, the fact that I can find anything and EVERYTHING under one roof and all I have to do is fall into the spell of that red bullseye & empty my wallet. What I would give to swipe that RedCard right now after scanning my Cartwheel and give them all my money.

- Friends & Family

These are the obvious ones. Making friends is hard let alone in a new country, as an adult, with no job, who has nowhere to go, and doesn't speak the language. So my social life is lacking to say the least. I do thankfully have my in-law's not far away (and I am lucky because I really, really like mine) & family friends nearby so I get a bit of home base but nothing beats the insanity of your own blood.

- Jay

Yeah, my dog. But I mean look at this face. How do you not miss this?! Plus FaceTime is the least interesting thing in the world to him. Honestly, the only person who will appreciate this one is my brother soooo this is really for his & my enjoyment.

Are you an Expat? What do you miss from home? What do you always ask people to bring you?
